Northern California: Outside in October's Inspiration is Here
Join me and the return of #getOWLside to inspire more people to get outside and discover the benefits of finding their next adventure!
October is here, and with it comes the return of #getOWLside (OutdoorWiseLiving = OWL)! This month, I’m encouraging everyone to share their trail inspirations and tag me in your posts. I’ll be resharing some of my favorites throughout the month in my stories. Let’s inspire each other to explore more and discover the hidden gems around us.
October is a perfect month to explore the Bay Area’s diverse landscapes, with cooler temperatures making it ideal for hiking. This month, I’m featuring a range of trails that showcase the stunning natural beauty of the region - from magical botanical gardens to scenic beaches - these trails have something for everyone.
A reminder that most of my work is community supported. Please consider a paid subscription: benefits include my comprehensive California map (updated weekly and featuring easy to use filters to all my trail guides), prioritized spots in group hikes, exclusive ‘super’ secret spot reveals, and more!
Now, let's get to the trails:
1. Sonoma Botanical Gardens (Glen Ellen)
Nestled among the 2100+ wineries in Napa and Sonoma County, the Sonoma Botanical Gardens stand out as a unique gem. This place transforms into a magical foliage spot in October. Start your journey at the top where there are prayer flags and meander down the trail, passing waterfalls and so much more.
Pro Tips:
Trail details:Â Various paths to explore.
Parking:Â Available on-site. No pets allowed.
Must-See:Â The vibrant fall foliage and serene waterfalls.
Hours:Â Open daily 10-5. Admission: $15 for adults, free for children under 4.
2. Knowland Park (Oakland)
This approximately two-mile loop is a great location to find both tree swings and a backend view of the zoo. You can see the bears, wolves, and more!
Pro Tips:
Trail details:Â About a two mile loop. This trail gets you close, but you really want to walk over to this area for the zoo viewing spot and a closer proximity to the tree swings.
Parking:Â Available on numerous places off of Malcolm Ave, such as here. Kid and dog friendly!
Must-See:Â The tree swings and views of the zoo animals.
3. Martin’s Beach (Half Moon Bay)
A controversial beach that a billionaire has tried to privatize many times. It’s less than a mile out and back and best seen at low tide. Be cautious of sneaker waves.
Pro Tips:
4. Bodega Head Trail (Bodega Bay)
A scenic 1.6-mile and easy trail in Bodega Bay is a must-do. Just south of Bodega Harbor and part of a four-mile peninsula, Bodega Head is an incredible place to find rock arches and grey whales.
Pro Tips:
5. Linda Falls (Angwin)
A 50ft waterfall near Napa, just under 2 miles as an out and back. It’s about 250 feet of elevation and very kid-friendly.
Pro Tips:
Get out there and enjoy the beauty of October! Don’t forget to tag me in your posts with #getOWLside for a chance to be featured in my stories. Happy hiking!
